 Sin + Discipline = LOVE

We are constantly amazed at what your children are absorbing in Devotions and all throughout their day.  Today in all school Devotions, on the dry erase board I drew a red frilly heart with a cross inside it to symbolize Valentine’s Day.  Our Catechism question of the week related to the doctrine of Sin; Question # 29 “What is sin?” Answer # 29  “Sin is any lack of conformity to or transgression of the Law of God.”

It seemed like a huge contradiction to discuss Valentine’s Day and then talk about our sin, but the children and I soon realized that love and sin have far more in common than we thought. In the past few weeks we have been talking about the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and how Satan disguised as a snake tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Satan lied to Eve.  We have talked about how sad it was because everything changed once sin entered the world.

We talked about the verse John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

I asked them what was the opposite of love, and a 4 year old  chimed in “hate.”

I asked them about the one thing that God says in the Bible that He hates, and a child piped up “Satan!” and then we talked about how God hates sin, that was brought to the world by Satan’s temptation. AND Yet GOD LOVES US, the sinners!

I pointed out that just like their moms still love them when they do something wrong, God loves us even when we sin. I asked why that was, and a child added in “because I’m her kid!” We talked about how God loves us too much to leave us in our sin, and that he sent his son Jesus to cover our sins and return us to God. "the Lord disciplines those He loves."

A 5 year old closed it out well when he eagerly raised his hand and said “Jesus said let the little children come to me.” Wow. We are blessed.
